Fields to Frames: Peter Hyde's Journey and New England Inspiration

As Henry David Thoreau succinctly stated: “It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.”

Peter Hyde, a native of Rome, Italy, was immersed in the world of art at a young age thanks to his parents who studied at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). However, it was his upbringing in the picturesque landscapes of New England that truly shaped his artistic vision. The dynamic interplay of colors across the four seasons left an indelible mark on Peter's plein air work, infusing his creations with a vivid and ever-changing palette.

His artistic journey can be traced back to his early years, when his mother fostered his creativity by introducing him to the enchanting world of art in her studio. Utilizing unconventional tools like beeswax on zinc plates, young Peter began to explore the magic of self-expression. It was at the kitchen counter, under his mother's watchful eye, that he honed his skills with pencil and paper, producing his first strokes of imagination.

In 2012, Peter's path took an exciting turn as he settled on Cape Cod, where he simultaneously embraced his culinary dream and embarked on a new artistic adventure. As the Chef/Owner of the Blue Moon Bistro in Dennis, Peter discovered a profound connection between the flavors of the local farms and the vibrant canvases of his artwork. These rural havens became both a source of inspiration and a backdrop for his sketches and paintings.

With a heart captivated by the beauty of both land and sea, Peter's artistic journey expanded beyond Cape Cod. His plein air studies, gathered from diverse locations, evolved into stunning studio pieces that captured the essence of Maine's rugged landscapes, Massachusetts' charming corners, and the majestic peaks of New Hampshire's White Mountains.

Peter's artistic evolution has been further enriched through his studies with esteemed mentors. Under the guidance of Lance Walker and Robert Roark on Cape Cod, as well as through workshops led by such nationally acclaimed painters like Don Demers, he honed his craft and broadened his artistic horizons.

A dedicated member of prominent artistic institutions, including the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM), the Creative Arts Center in Chatham, MA, and the Duxbury Art Association, Peter Hyde continues to push the boundaries of his creativity. His work, a fusion of cultural roots, natural landscapes, and boundless imagination, stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to the art that has shaped his life's journey.
